Preventive consultations and vaccinations
Adult horses should be examined by a veterinary professional at least once a year, and senior horses, who are at higher disease risk, should be evaluated twice a year. These consultations are a great time to address any concerns, check your horse’s fecal egg count so we can devise an appropriate deworming schedule, check and float your horse’s teeth if needed, and ensure your horse’s vaccines are up to date. Our team will devise an appropriate vaccine schedule for your horse, depending on their lifestyle, that may include:
- Core vaccines — Your horse should receive these vaccines, which include rabies, tetanus, West Nile virus, and Eastern and Western equine encephalitis, every year.
- Risk-based vaccines — Depending on your horse’s travel expectations and exposure risk, we may recommend other vaccines such as equine influenza, strangles, equine herpesvirus, Potomac horse fever, botulism, Lyme disease, leptospirosis, and equine viral arteritis.
