Sick animals
If your sheep or goats are ill, our veterinary team is available to diagnose problems and develop an appropriate treatment strategy. Common issues that affect small ruminants include:
- Coccidiosis — Coccidiosis is a costly parasitic disease that causes watery diarrhea, weakness, dehydration, fever, weight loss, and sudden death. Kids and lambs are at highest risk during the post-weaning period.
- Circling disease — This life-threatening disease, also known as listeriosis, results when goats and sheep eat spoiled forages or feed contaminated by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Signs include circling to one side, facial nerve paralysis, impaired swallowing, and seizures.
- Overeating disease — This condition, also known as enterotoxemia, is caused when Clostridium perfringens toxins are absorbed through the intestine. Signs include profuse diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, fever, and sudden death.
- Foot rot — Foot rot is a contagious hoof disease that affects sheep and goats and commonly occurs during warm, rainy weather. If not treated properly, the condition can cause permanent lameness.
