Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses ultrasonic sound waves to produce images of body structures. The sound waves travel through the body and are reflected back to the transducer when the beam hits a boundary between tissues (e.g., between fluid and soft tissue, or tissue and bone). When these echoes reach the transducer, the ultrasound scanner generates a two-dimensional image. Ultrasound is used for many purposes, including:
- Evaluating the heart’s structure and function
- Diagnosing conditions that are difficult to image using X-ray
- Measuring tumors or organs
- Guiding needle biopsies
- Collecting fluid samples
