Spay and Neuter

Spay and neuter procedures are among the most common surgeries we perform. Pets who are spayed and neutered typically live longer. These procedures have many other advantages, including:

  • Health advantages for female pets — Spaying your female pet before her first heat cycle protects her from birthing complications and pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection. In addition, the procedure decreases her mammary cancer risk.
  • Health advantages for male pets — Neutering your male pet protects him from testicular cancer and decreases his risk of prostate issues.

  • Behavioral advantages — Spayed and neutered pets are less likely to roam and to urine mark their environment.

A new lump or bump on your pet can be concerning. After examining the mass, our veterinary team may recommend surgical removal so we can identify the lump as malignant (i.e., cancerous) or benign (e.g., skin tag, wart, cyst, or fatty tumors). In some cases, we may biopsy the lesion before removal, but we may elect to remove the entire area of concern, eliminating the need for a second surgical procedure. Once removed, we submit the tissue for histopathological evaluation to determine:
  • Tumor type
  • If the entire tumor was removed
  • If the tumor is likely to return
  • If the tumor is likely to spread
  • If other treatments are necessary

Soft Tissue Procedures

Soft tissue surgeries include those involving the skin, muscles, and internal organs. Some examples include:

  • Wound repair — If your pet is wounded, our veterinary team will clean and debride the area and suture the wound closed to ensure the area heals as well as possible.
  • Foreign body removal — Some pets are prone to ingesting foreign objects, such as socks, bones, and small toys, which can cause a gastrointestinal obstruction that requires surgical removal.

  • Urethral obstruction correction — Urethral obstruction, which most commonly affects male cats, prevents urination and is considered a life-threatening situation. Our veterinary team takes the appropriate steps to relieve the obstruction and treat the affected cat.
  • Organ biopsy or removal — In some cases, we may need to biopsy or remove an organ, which requires soft tissue surgery.
