Professional veterinary dental cleanings are the only way to remove bacteria from under your pet’s gum line where most damage occurs. This procedure involves:

Anesthesia — Our veterinary team anesthetizes your pet to prevent stress and discomfort, and to ensure the team can thoroughly evaluate and clean your pet’s mouth. A trained veterinary professional carefully monitors your pet’s vitals and anesthesia level throughout the procedure.
Oral examination — We examine your pet’s mouth and teeth, probing gingival pockets and feeling for loose teeth.

Cleaning — We remove plaque and tartar from your pet’s teeth and use subgingival curettage to remove bacteria below the gum line.
Polishing — We polish your pet’s teeth after cleaning to prevent bacterial accumulation.
Recording — Our veterinary team charts all significant findings in your pet’s record.

When assessing your pet’s mouth, we can visualize only about 50% of each tooth—the other 50% is hidden below the gum line—so dental X-rays are necessary to fully evaluate your pet’s dental health. The teeth may appear normal, but X-rays can reveal bone loss caused by dental disease, mandibular fractures caused by bacterial invasion, tooth root abscesses, tooth fractures, unerupted teeth, and tooth resorption lesions in cats. Dental X-rays are an important part of every dental cleaning, so we can identify hidden problems, and prevent them from worsening and causing your pet pain.

When evaluating your pet’s dental health, our veterinary team may determine that your pet requires a dental procedure, such as a tooth extraction or oral tumor removal. If this is necessary, we will explain your pet’s condition in detail to ensure you understand every aspect of the procedure.

Optimal Healing

After a dental procedure, we often prescribe medications, such as antibiotics and pain medications, to combat infection and help keep your pet comfortable. We may also prescribe a soft diet for your pet to allow their mouth to heal.
